[232] TO RACHEL HODGKINS, 10 JULY 1914

Equihen. July 10th.

My dearest little Mother

It is always such a relief & joy to me when your letters come telling me you are well…. I have been having rather a fiendish time one way & another. My pupils hate this place & cant find subjects, idiots, & have persuaded me much against my inclination to go off to Concarneau & throw up the cottage…. I am now packing once more & will be off in a couple of hours. It is 6.30 – a lovely pearly morning. I can almost see England it is so clear. An aeroplane has just passed glittering like a silver bee. Three companies of soldiers are passing along under my window singing. I can almost touch their caps they are so close. They are on fatigue duty from Boulogne & are making for the sands to cross to Hardelot. I hate going. I really love this place & my little cottage & the simple quiet life…. A rival group of students have asked me to stay & take them on but I can’t break faith with my old pupils…. No more now dearest. I [am] off to get a bowl of hot coffee at the Hotel. I have been up since cock crow, I had a brain fever day yesterday finishing pictures. A coy sun – & two little devils of babies to finish. Will write from Concarneau
